Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Ronny Mauricio delivered the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning Tuesday for the host New York Mets, who beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 in the opener of a three-game series.
Automatic runner Francisco Lindor went to third on Bo Bichette's groundout and trotted home on Mauricio's hit to deep right off Paul Sewald (0-2). The plate appearance was the first of the season for Mauricio, who replaced Juan Soto when the latter went on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left calf Monday.
Luke Weaver (1-0) earned the win by retiring all three batters in the top of the 10th.
Brett Baty and Jared Young each delivered a sacrifice fly and Francisco Alvarez scored on an error for the Mets, who extended their winning streak to four games.
Adrian Del Castillo (two-run single) and Nolan Arenado (double) had RBI hits in the fifth for the Diamondbacks, who lost for the third time in five games since they were swept by the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in a season-opening series.
Neither starter factored into the decision.
The Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings. Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five over 4 2/3 innings.
The Mets scratched out single runs against Gallen in the first and second. Gallen opened the game by allowing three straight singles before Baty lofted a sacrifice fly.
Alvarez walked with two outs in the third. Lindor followed by doubling over the glove of Corbin Carroll in right field and Alvarez raced home when Carroll's throw skipped past second baseman Ketel Marte and dribbled into the infield.
The Diamondbacks stranded five runners against Peralta in the first four innings before breaking through with a two-out rally in the fifth. Carroll singled and Geraldo Perdomo walked before Peralta plunked Gabriel Moreno.
Huascar Brazoban entered and gave up the game-tying single to Del Castillo, who extended the at-bat by winning an ABS challenge on a called strike three. Arenado then hit a bloop RBI double to shallow center.
The Mets tied the score in the eighth, when Jorge Polanco led off with a single and pinch runner Tyrone Taylor raced to third on Baty's one-out single before he scored on Young's pinch-hit fly to right.
